Day 1

Then going to explore Semarang city by visiting Sam Poo Kong (Chinese & Muslim Temple), next explore Lawang Sewu (perceived as 1000 doors). This place has become landmark of Semarang and proud by Semarang people, built as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. Then going to local restaurant for lunch. After lunch we will explore Old City or Little Netherlands where there are 50 old buildings such as Blenduk Church: Protestant church was built in 1753 by Dutch with neo-classic style has two minarets and one dome.

Semarang City

Semarang is a city on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia. It is the capital and largest city of the province of Central Java. It has an area of 373.78 square kilometres and a population of approximately 1,8 million people, making it Indonesia’s fifth most populous city and the fifth largest Indonesian city after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Medan. The built-up (metro) area had 3,183,516 inhabitants at the 2010 census spread on 2 cities and 26 districts.  Greater Semarang (akaKedungsapur) has a population of close to 6 million (see Greater Semarang section).  A major port during the Dutch colonial era, and still an important regional center and port today, the city has a dominant Javanese population.

Vihara (Klenteng) Sam Po Kong

Sam Poo Kong, also known as Gedung Batu Temple, is the oldest Chinese temple in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. Originally established by the Chinese Muslim explorer Zheng He (also known as Sanbao), it is now shared by Indonesians of multiple religious denominations, including Muslims and Buddhists, and ethnicity, including Chinese and Javanese.

Lawang Sewu

Lawang Sewu (“Thousand Doors”) is a landmark in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, built as the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company. The colonial era building is famous as a haunted house, though the Semarang city government has attempted to re brand it.

Abandoned and antique buildings have a tendency to inspire stories. Legends, Myths, Haunted tales of the building’s origin, its owners and builders. Indonesia as a whole is home to numerous historical and mystical buildings, many antique and dating back hundreds of years. One such building is Lawang Sewu which was built by the Dutch between the years 1904 and 1907 and functioned as head office for The Dutch East Indies Railway Company (Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij) until 1942. During World War II, the building was used as Japanese Military Headquarters. It is located on the Tugu Muda roundabout, in Semarang, capital city of Central Java.

Kota Lama

Kota Lama consists of several areas that come with a distinct nuance. The good thing is tourists are able to explore them all freely. Most of the buildings apply the Dutch architecture, for sure. In fact, these structures have been there since the 18th century. Despite the age, the condition remains good and sturdy. The appearance doesn’t look too good, though. It is because the local government wants to retain its historical value, so they decided to keep it that way.

Gedong Songo Temple

Gedong Songo Temple or the nine Temples located in Bandungan area – Ungaran, 2 hours drive from Jogjakarta or 1,5 hours drive from Semarang – the capital city of central Java. The temples are a group of Hindu temples located in Central Java, Indonesia. The site was originally built during the early period of the Medang Kingdom which controlled Central Java during the 8th and 9th centuries. Similar to the Dieng temples on the Dieng Plateau, Gedong Songo was erected out of volcanic stone. The temples of Gedong Songo reflect a similar architectural structure to those on the Dieng Plateau, though they have less variation in form than them. Gedong Songo displays more emphasis on plinth and cornice moldings. At Temple 3, an entrance is outlined by a vestibule that is decorated by guardian figures. Temple III is a Shiva temple, paired with a facing Nandi shrine.

There were some speculation why all 9 temples had never been finished, either because they were attacked by other kingdom at that time, or the change of the monarchy stop the construction. The initial plan is to make the 1st temple with 1 temple, the 2nd temple are 2 temples, and so on until the 9th temple are consist of 9 temples. Borobudur Temple

The Borobudur Temple Compounds is one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world, and was built in the 8th and 9th centuries AD during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty. The monument is located in the Kedu Valley, in the southern part of Central Java, at the center of the island of Java, Indonesia. The entire site contains 504 statues of the Buddha. 1460 stone reliefs on the walls and opposite balustrades decorate the first four galleries, with an additional 1212 decorative reliefs augmenting the path. The relief sculptures narrate the Buddha’s teachings (the Dharma), depict various events related to his past lives (Jataka tales), and illustrate didactic stories taken from important Buddhist scriptures (sutras). Interestingly, another 160 relief sculptures adorn the base of the monument, but are concealed behind stone buttresses that were added shortly after the building’s construction in order to further support the structure’s weight. The hidden narrative reliefs were photographed when they were discovered in the late 19th century before the stones were put back to help ensure the temple’s stability.-Semarang City Tour Borobudur Temple
